MODERN REMUERA RENOVATION
Our clients wanted to give their Remuera home a stunning modern renovation and needed a practical, user friendly, beautiful kitchen to help them achieve their reno dreams! The old kitchen was dated and had very little storage or functionality with a doorway taking up valuable space in the room, and cupboards instead of drawers making it tricky to reach those items that always find their way to the very back of the cupboard! The clients wanted a butler’s sink, handle-less cabinetry, a kitchen island and somewhere to place the coffee machine!
As one occupant was a wheelchair user, we thought about maximising functionality and storage without compromising the aesthetics which the clients desired and decided on a LeMans pull out storage unit. We played around with the height of the upper shelf so our client could use it as an easy pull-out work surface while in their chair. We ensured there was easy flow from the sink and dishwasher to the drawers. Finally we challenged the space by experimenting with removing a doorway in the back of the kitchen to enable us to use the full back wall for cabinetry. The family of four were at first hesitant to lose this door so they blocked it off for a weekend to see how they felt about it, and decided losing the door really didn’t impact their lives and were excited to use the valuable space to create a bigger, more functional kitchen.
This stunning black, grey and woodgrain kitchen incorporates many universal design features such as additional drawers, rounded benchtop, soft touch drawers and cupboards, pull out drawers in the pantry and task lighting . Universal design can be described as “the design and function of an environment which can be accessed, understood and used by all people, regardless of their age, size, ability or disability. An environment should be created to meet the needs of all people who wish to use it. This is not a special requirement, for the benefit of only a minority of the population. It is a fundamental condition of good design.”
